File Sharing Without Permanent Cloud Storage

Understand direct P2P transfers, relay fallback, transfer limits and when cloud storage may still be useful.

Direct answer

Glass Desktop Box™ can transfer files without placing them in permanent cloud storage. It attempts a direct peer-to-peer connection first and uses a relay only when required by network conditions. This is a transfer workflow, not a replacement for backup or long-term cloud storage.

Who this guide is for: For users who want to move selected files directly between people while retaining control of the local originals.

Transfer is different from storage

Cloud storage keeps a persistent copy that can be synchronized or accessed later. Direct file sharing focuses on moving selected content from one participant to another. Neither model is universally better; they solve different problems.

Glass Desktop Box™ is useful when the goal is a controlled transfer connected to a visual workspace rather than a permanent shared cloud repository.

Direct route and relay fallback

A peer-to-peer route minimizes intermediaries when network conditions permit. Firewalls, carrier networks or organizational restrictions can make a direct connection unavailable, so a relay fallback may be required to complete the transfer reliably.

Limits and responsibilities

Browser Remote accepts files up to 1 GB each and ProBox accepts files up to 5 GB each. Monthly transfer allowances depend on the selected plan. Transfers are verified, but users remain responsible for file contents and appropriate authorization.

Important limitations

  • It does not replace versioned backups.
  • Relay fallback may be required.
  • Plan allowances and single-file limits still apply.

Frequently asked questions

Is Glass Desktop Box™ cloud storage?

No. It is a desktop-first organization and transfer platform.

Do I still need cloud storage?

Possibly. Cloud storage remains useful for backup, synchronization and persistent shared access.

Are files always transferred P2P?

A direct route is attempted first; a relay may be used when necessary.
